One of the best and most unique ways to have fun while on vacation is to rent a surfboard and take some lessons. Whether you know what you’re doing, or if you want to try your hand at something new, there are plenty of places to help you feel like a pro. We’ve compiled some of the best spots for surfing, including lessons and gear rentals.
Jimmy Lane Surfing Academy
The surfing academy’s teachings have been crafted around learning more about the ocean through surfing.
Jimmy’s way of teaching you to surf encompasses an education in ocean safety. With nearly 40 years of surfing experience, Jimmy is considered one of the top surf instructors in the area. You’ll learn ocean and paddling skills and surfing techniques and etiquette, while having fun learning to ride the waves. He offers a summer surf camp as well as private lessons. There are a variety of options so you’re sure find something perfect for your skill level.

Surfin’ NSB
This surf school provides lessons for individuals or even a group, making it a well-rounded stop for your family vacation.
The lessons are super convenient, and instructors will teach you to ride the waves anywhere you want (depending on the swell, of course). Since many of our rentals on New Smyrna Beach are right by the ocean, you can often find a surf spot right out your front door.
Don’t worry, if you can’t find the right surf spot for you, ask the instructors. They can take you for a lesson and recommend breaks in the area to suit your level.
Lessons last about an hour and a half, with 15 minutes of dry-land instruction before heading into the water for an hour or so, depending on conditions. All of the equipment you need to learn how to master surfing will be provided for you.
Individual lessons are $60 a person, and group lessons are $40. All equipment costs are included in the price.
